1 Million user hits for iOS iPhoto in 10 days

LoopInsight has reported that Apple’s iPhoto App for iOS has 1 million users, iPhoto was released 10 days ago; the same day as the new iPad. iPhoto is available for both iPad’s and iPhone’s from the App Store for $4.99/£2.99, this equates to a revenue of $4,990,000/£2,990,000. LoopInsight has said that:

“Apple told me today that its newest iOS app, iPhoto, hit 1 million users in less than 10 days after its release. It’s important to note that figure is users, not downloads. It’s quite possible that one user downloaded the app multiple times, but Apple isn’t counting those, only the unique users.”

New iPad running hot & won’t charge under heavy processor usage

Consumer Reports have done their own investigation after claims of the new iPad  is running a lot hotter than the iPad 2, after Consumer Reports had their device playing Infinity Blade II for 45 minutes their new iPad got to temperatures of 116 degrees Fahrenheit on both the front and back. Consumer Reports has said that:

“We ran our test while the new iPad was propped on the iPad Smart Cover, plugged in, and after it had run Infinity Blade II uninterrupted for about 45 minutes. The device’s 4G connection was not turned on, though its Wi-fi link was. The ambient room temperature was about 72 degrees. (Apple recommends not using the iPad in environments over 95 degrees.)

When unplugged, the back of the new iPad reached temperatures as high as 113 degrees Fahrenheit. It was only when plugged in that it hit 116 degrees. The hottest areas weren’t evenly distributed throughout the iPad’s back, but were concentrated near one corner of the display as shown in the images taken from the rear of the device above.”

The Consumer Reports device interestingly also failed to charge when the game was running, the device then went on draining its battery until the game was closed. The device failing to charge seems to be due to it not being able to draw enough power to charge the device as well as power the Retina Display as well as the Processor. Infinity Blade II is a very CPU and GPU intensive game so users should not find an issue when playing less resource intensive games.

New iPad Vs Transformer Prime Benchmark Test

Earlier we posts about Insanely Great Mac doing benchmarking tests on all of the iPad series, LaptopMag has also done a benchmarking test but not iPad Vs iPad, this time iPad Vs the best selling Android tablet; the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime. When Apple released the new iPad they claimed that the A5X processor powering it had 4x the graphical performance of the as the Tegra 3, the processor powering the Transformer Prime. LaptopMag only managed to find one test that the difference between the new iPad and the Transformer Prime was 4x better, this being the Fill Test. The Transformer Prime dominated the new iPad with the Processor test, this is down the the Transformer Prime packing a Quad-Core CPU compared to the new iPad and its Dual-Core CPU. There is also a video showing the new iPad and the  Transformer Prime in comparison with game play or Shadowgun and Riptide GP below. There is a few issues with this comparison video including the Games are optimised for the Tegra 3 Processor and the iPad version has not been updated for the A5X processor and the Retina Display.

New iPad Vs iPad 2 Vs iPad Benchmark Test

Insanely Great Mac have benchmarked all three iPads comparing the processor and graphics between them all. One surprise that came from the benchmarking tests was that the Quad-Core GPU in the new iPad does not provide a greater graphical powered experience over the iPad 2, the extra power in the Quad-Core GPU is used just to power the new Retina Display. This doesn’t mean that you will not be able to tell the difference between the devices, the new iPad with its Retina Display will provide an improved visual experience but there will be very little difference between frame rates.
